The Karen people are an ethnic group living in South-East Asia. They are culturally and linguistically diverse. While most Karen people are Skaw Karen, there are other Karen cultural and language groups such as Pwo Karen and Bwe Karen.

Founder of Highlands Green, Nathenial Heng who has the passion and love towards the Karen refugees, been walking life journey with them and empowered the farmers how to sow seeds, plant, grow and harvest the “queen of the spices” turmeric root and murungai.

Nathenial Heng has dedicated to train and improve the lives of the Karen refugees from Burma [Myanmar] by facilitating for them to plant valuable crops such as turmeric utilising sustainable farming practices to improve their livelihood. How does it started? It all began with a doctor's love for his patients [the karen refugees]. In turn they responded in love and appreciation to this physician by providing turmeric to ease his pain and inflammation. He was unable to practise medicine because of a debilitating illness.

The Karen villagers from Burma would prepare fresh turmeric root for Dr. Vandenhautte to help alleviate his excruciating pain from a jungle parasite in his body.

This naturally-grown “queen of the spices” turmeric root combined with naturally-grown superfood moringa are grown using only organic farming methods with no pesticides or commercial fertilizers. Also hardworking farmer like Mr Bawboe, took up ownership in the whole farming harvesting process with dignity and integrity, providing the premium product to all nations.
